Recently, I received email from a doctor who asked above question.
I believe if you have done AMC1, you are planning to come to Australia and work as a doctor. I will also assume that you have done your IELTS/OET.
Option 1 would be to stay in your home country and continue doing clinical practice while awaiting for AMC 2. There are pros and cons about this option.
Pros -
Option 2 would be to come to Australia and wait for the exam
* You will learn about Australian culture
* Finding job can be difficult in medicine in Australia and it may take up to 12 months or longer
* You need visa to enter in Australia - well, most of people will need
Guys, there are multiple options after AMC1. I will try to answer above question in this article.
Basically, if you want to be fully registered in Australia, you have to do AMC 2 and 1 year of supervised training (internship) if you are coming after MBBS and want to follow general pathway of AMC. I have not discussed specialist pathway and competent pathway.
Option 1 would be to stay in your home country and continue doing clinical practice while awaiting for AMC 2. There are pros and cons about this option.
Pros -
* You will be practicing medicine and your will be building your clinical experience which will come with all your life.
* You will be earning money to support your venture about AMC exam
Cons -
* You will be working in your home country and my understanding is that you want to work in Australia as a doctor, but remember your experience will count at some degree even in Australia
* It is hard to pass AMC clinical exam with this option as you have no/little clinical experience in Australia
* You will be waiting for exam dates for about 18-20 months or may be longer
* It is difficult to find job as a doctor in Australia if you are overseas
Option 2 would be to come to Australia and wait for the exam
Pros -
* It is little bit easier to find job in medicine compare to 1st option* You will learn about Australian culture
* Your English language and communication skill will improve (If English is not your first language)
* The best benefit would be lot easier to clear clinical exam
Cons -
* You may need to work in other areas while looking for job in medicine* Finding job can be difficult in medicine in Australia and it may take up to 12 months or longer
* You need visa to enter in Australia - well, most of people will need
* If you cannot find any other job then it can be very costly to support yourself in Australia - cost depends upon where you live in Australia

Hi Coold777,
ReplyDeleteIt is hard to predict future, but migration is there and population in austration is getting older. Australia will not cope with current medical graduates and will need IMG/OTD as per my knowledge and thinking. At the moment, most of the people settle in cities, which may change over the time and more OTD/IMG will need to go to country side in future.
I Have passed AMC-1 and IELTS required band since six months.Applied for many RMO, SHO,PHO, non-training and training jobs still not able to get one position.
ReplyDeleteWould appreciate if any assistance provided.thanks
I have passed AMC MCQ and IELTS in november and december last year. I am unable to find a job applying from overseas. I want to come to Australia to look for jobs and prepare for AMC Clinical. Can you please tell me the visa options that i might have at this statge?
ReplyDeleteH Fahad,
ReplyDeleteYou have few choices. You can come on visitor visa, student visa, business visa (only if someone sponsoring you) or find Australian PR/citizen partner if you are not married.
You can get visitor visa for courses and clinical exam.
Hope this helps.
thank you so much Sachin. Yeah student visa did seem to be a good option to me as well. can you please suggest me what subject i should take admission in?
DeleteYou can choose anything you like and anything you can get in. Try to take something similar to health field, although you are not going to get in clinical side, there are lots of non-clinical areas you can choose which may help you in future. Public Health, Health service management, family medicine, reproductive medicine, sonography/radiography etc.

ReplyDeletecould you kindly help me out with a question i had regarding this........i was wondering if after clearning the AMC both mcq and clinical and i wish to do an MD in medicine how can i pursue that? also if i go to australia and give the AMC1 there is that a good idea? and are there any training centers for IMG'S to prepare for the AMC there? i also have another question ...lets say i have cleared the AMC1 how and where can i apply for internship? and will i need to support myself financially during internship or do we get some amount of salary from the place where we are interning?
Hi Jasmine,
ReplyDeleteIf you want to do MD (in clinical field) then first thing is to get job and then apply. Once you are in the system (working as HMO/RMO or intern) you will understand how that works.
There are few courses in Australia, but I would recommended for clinical more than MCQ (although it is up to you and if you have enough money then you can do it - you only going to get benefit).
You get enough money to support yourself and save while doing internship. You don't need any money from external source as internship is well paid (way more than intern and specialist trainee get in India).
Thank you sir
ReplyDeleteI had another question i heard that getting an internship is becoming harder there is this true? also is it possible that you could give me your email or something so i may contact you if its comfortable with you sir
is this blog still working i have some questions

ReplyDeleteDr Sachin,
ReplyDeleteWe are migrating to South Australia in January, 2016. My wife intends to appear in AMC within 2 or 3 months after moving there.
Can she get a job after part 1 of AMC? and what are the perspectives of jobs over there in South Australia as compared to other states of Australia, as we have to stay for 2 years in this state . I will appreciate if I can get your Email ID

Can I give amc1 after completion of final year before internship in india?
ReplyDeleteHi Sir,
ReplyDeleteI am currently preparing for AMC MCQ test. However I am really concern about my future as according to my plan I want to apply for internship after passing the AMC Test 1, and for your information I am a medical fresh graduate. So is it possible to get an internship after i pass the AMC MCQ test 1 in Australia? Or I should go back to my country to get my medical license and internship done first?
What is subclass of visa after passing amc1 examination? For doing practise in rural area?
